Bring the festive indulgence of British Sausage Rolls to your next holiday gathering!

Learn an easy, budget-friendly recipe to make delicious sausage rolls.

There’s nothing more comforting than traditional golden brown, flaky British Sausage Rolls.

Now that the Christmas holiday is approaching, I must plan my grocery shops to include all the staples to make my treats and appetizers.

If you are looking for savory finger food for the holidays or any gathering, these are delicious, easy to make, and freeze.

Let me show you how easy this recipe is to make.

British Sausage Rolls: A Hearty Meal or Snack

The best part is they won’t bust your grocery budget and look like you put lots of effort into them.

British Sausage Rolls are easy to make, and you won’t ever buy the frozen version from the grocery store.

A British Staple In Our Household

This sausage roll recipe always takes me back to the time of year when they were a staple at almost all parties and social gatherings in our family.

Our house is always busy at Christmas and New Year’s, and everyone who visits asks if I’ve made my sausage rolls. I guess that means they like them.

I need to create many finger food recipes so there is always something ready for our guests to snack on.

This time of year, we always have guests coming and going, Mum making her Christmas cakes, milk toffee, and mincemeat pies.

There’s never a dull moment in our household.

Memories Of British Sausage Rolls

Memories of sausage rolls hot out of the oven date back to when I was a child watching my mum and dad in the kitchen.

My dad’s task was always carving the turkey and making the appetizers, especially for our New Year’s bash (Hogmanay).

I always remember Dad making these little bite-size rolls that seemed to disappear as soon as they were on the table.

He was so precise in how the sausage rolls had to look and taste, and now I’m the same way.

Continuing The Christmas Tradition

I make these flaky sausage rolls but family-size portions to eat throughout the year, but I add just a bit of heat to boost my holiday recipe.

Sometimes I make a puff pastry as my dad did, but there’s nothing wrong with buying frozen puff pastry from the grocery store if you don’t have the time.

It’s inexpensive and will save you time, which many of us don’t have come November and December.

These appetizers are ideal for making ahead and freezing once cooked.

The best part about these little gems is that you will always have something quick to place on a baking sheet to reheat for guests to enjoy.

Why are my homemade sausage rolls soggy? ›

Why do my homemade sausage rolls have soggy bottoms? To prevent soggy sausage rolls, make sure your oven is preheated before cooking. Ensure to space out the sausage rolls on the baking tray when cooking to ensure there is enough room for the air to circulate and allow them to crisp up.

Can you get sausage rolls in USA? ›

You can find sausage rolls in pizza shops in New York, but if course, they use pizza dough on the outside, and Italian sausages, which are also quite different. I suspect they're an Italian-American thing, not an authentic Italian food.

What American sausage is closest to bangers? ›

Just a regular lightly-seasoned fresh pork sausage. Plain breakfast sausage would probably be the closest. A Banger is not a good sausage.

Why does British sausage taste different? ›

In the British Isles we have eleven native pig breeds, all of which are traiditionally used to produce wonderfully different tasting meat depending on where the breed is from and what it traditionally grazes upon.

What makes British sausage different? ›

These types of sausages have a much denser texture, are heavier and firmer and have less seasoning. You can get a great continental version of the sausage that is 100% meat but it is not something that British people tend to favour.

Why are British sausages so good? ›

A good British sausage should be made with at least 70 percent high-quality meat, usually beef, pork, or a mixture of both. The remaining contents include seasoning, breadcrumbs, and fat. Across the UK, there are many regional varieties of sausages. These are just a few of the most easily found.

Do Germans eat sausage rolls? ›

The Germans have their well loved red or white sausages served in a bread roll with mustard and/or ketchup. These are an institution at football (soccer) games and at just about every festivity you can think of.

What is a fun fact about sausage rolls? ›

The longest sausage roll in the world was made by King Pie in South Africa and measured 111.11 metres. The most Greggs sausage rolls eaten in 30 minutes stands at 21, and was set by John Dawes in 2022. Sticking with Greggs, the company sells around two million sausage rolls - its most popular product - every week.

Which country eats the most sausages? ›

Germany (1.5M tonnes) constituted the country with the largest volume of sausage consumption, comprising approx. 27% of the total volume. Moreover, sausage consumption in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, Poland (574K tonnes), threefold.

Why can't you microwave sausage rolls? ›

It is generally not recommended to microwave sausage rolls because they can become overcooked and dry. Additionally, the pastry may become soggy and lose its flakiness when microwaved. If you want to reheat a sausage roll that has already been baked, it is best to do so in an oven or toaster oven.

Why do you chill sausage rolls before cooking? ›

I understand that you want to store unbaked saussage rolls and bake them the next day. IMHO you should be fine as long as the filling isn't too wet. Chill the pastry and the filling well before assembling, this will firm up the fats and reduce seeping from filling to pastry dough. Same goes for puff pastry.

What are the disadvantages of sausage rolls? ›

High in calories and fat: A typical sausage roll can pack 300-400 calories and 15-20 grams of fat, mostly saturated. This can contribute to weight gain and raise your risk of heart disease if consumed regularly. Low in nutrients: They're often lacking in essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
