Espresso Martini without Kahlua Recipe (1)

Taste the perfect blend of coffee and a classic co*cktail with a tempting Espresso Martini.

This is almost a perfect co*cktail for me as someone who likes coffee. Almost, because of the espresso, you don't taste the alcohol very well, and that makes it a bit treacherous. You drink in no time too much of this co*cktail. This delicious Espresso Martini is roughly equivalent to two glasses of wine (per drink). Most of the time, I drink this on a special occasion.

Besides the fact that this delicious co*cktail is perfect for a night out, this is also the perfect end for any dinner. I like to serve this with an Italian tiramisu, which it complements. But this is also really tasty with a chocolate mousse. For all coffee lovers: try it yourself!

What do you need for an Easy, Cold Espresso Martini recipe (Dairy-Free)?

You require the following simple ingredients to prepare this Espresso Martini without Kahlua Recipe. You can find the correct amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the blog:

  • Espresso: This is strong coffee, where the hot water is pressed through finely ground espresso beans under high pressure with an espresso maker or a French press. This makes the taste more intense. A good espresso has a layer of foam on top of the coffee. Contrary to what many people think, espresso contains less caffeine compared to a 'regular' cup of coffee. That's because the water's high pressure and speed give it little time to absorb the caffeine.
  • Vodka: Water and Alcohol based on rye, potato, or corn. This gives a neutral, strong drink without odor or pronounced taste.
  • Confectioner's sugar: Adds a little sweetness to the espresso martini. You can also omit this, but I prefer the sweet flavor. You could also use brown sugar or sugar cane. If you choose the latter, add them to the hot espresso and whisk until dissolved.
  • Coffee liqueur: A classic espresso Martini is made with Kahlua, but this drink is also delicious with Tia Maria coffee liqueur, a coffee liqueur, or Frangelico (and you get a nice hazelnut flavor with it, great choice). They're an excellent substitute.
  • Gold powder (optional): Make a charming rim around the glass.

How to prepare a Tasty Espresso Martini, Simple and Easy

You can find a printable recipe with a step-by-step guide to preparing this coffee-flavored co*cktail at the bottom of this blog.

Espresso Martini without Kahlua Recipe (3)
  1. Put ice cubes, icing sugar, and vodka at the bottom of a co*cktail shaker.
  2. Add the cold, fresh espresso.
  3. Finally, add the coffee liqueur.
  4. Now shake vigorously for one minute. Keep your finger on the cap of the shaker (because it can jump off (experience expert 😉 )). Pour the espresso martini through the strainer into a nice glass. Serve immediately.

If you want to serve the espresso martini nicely, add a glass rim, as I did here, with some gold powder. Dip the glass first in a water bowl and then in the gold powder. It's also nice to use some coffee beans as decoration, but then mention in front you can't eat them!

Tips, Substitutions, and Variations

  • It is also lovely to use a chocolate liqueur such as crème de cacao, Bailey's Irish cream, or Licor 43 chocolate instead of a coffee liquor for this coffee co*cktail.
  • Or mix a touch of cinnamon with this co*cktail (also delicious).
  • If you want a real foam layer (like with an espresso coffee), shake a fresh raw egg white in the co*cktail shaker. By shaking, you get a nice foam layer.
  • Espresso: If you don't have an espresso machine, make the espresso with espresso powder (instant coffee) that you can buy in the store.

Servings: 2 co*cktails

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon edible gold powder, optional
  • 1 handful ice cubes
  • cup Vodka
  • ¼ cup coffee liqueur
  • 1 cup espresso cooled
  • 1 teaspoon confectioners sugar

US Customary - Metric

Ingredients you need per step are listed below the step in Italic

Instructions

  • If you like it, dab the glass rim of the martini glasses (or co*cktail glass) in advance in some water and then press it into gold powder.

    1 teaspoon edible gold

  • Put all ingredients in the co*cktail shaker and shake well for about 2 minutes

1 handful ice cubes, ⅓ cup Vodka, ¼ cup coffee liqueur, 1 cup espresso, 1 teaspoon confectioners sugar

  • Leave the strainer on the shaker and pour the Martini espresso into the glasses.

Notes

1. Espresso: If you don't have an espresso machine, make the espresso with instant espresso powder that you can buy in the store

2. Confectioner's sugar: Adds a little sweetness to the espresso martini. You can also omit this if you don't want to add extra sugar.

3. Coffee liqueur:

  • A traditional espresso Martini is made with Kahlua, but I use Kahlua substitutes like Tia Maria, a coffee liquor, or Frangelico (and you get a nice hazelnut flavor with it) because I like some variation.
  • Using a chocolate liqueur such as crème de cacao, Bailey's Irish cream, or licor 43 chocolate is also a great idea instead of a coffee liqueur. This gives a creamy espresso martini. The creamy co*cktail isn't dairy free when using one of these.
  • Or mix a touch of cinnamon with this co*cktail (also delicious).

4. Foamy top: If you want a foamy top (like with an espresso), shake a fresh raw egg white in the co*cktail shaker. By shaking, you get a frothy espresso martini.

5. Storage

Make the co*cktail fresh; you cannot store it.
